Our people

We're passionate about sustainability and service

We support each other, value each other, value our customers and value our local community.

Our common interest is caring, sharing and creating.

2021 will see us introduce separate bins for each of our offcuts to continue to supply local kindergartens, schools, home industries etc.  Give Caroline a call if you are looking for small offcuts, large cotton reels, large cardboard rolls etc. Remember to send us photos of what has been put together from our FREE bits of offcuts.

Members of the Outdoor Fabric Products Association of New Zealand

We are a member of OFPANZ and a multi award winner over the years. This year also saw Merv judge the awards which meant he had to abstain from voting or giving his opinion on our entries.

Shaun

Director, Production Manager, Fabricator

Shaun initially began his apprenticeship in boatbuilding but moved to marine trimming with The Boat Cover Company in Auckland. He has a National Certificate in Canvas Fabrication.

On moving to the Bay with his family 9 years ago, he worked with a large canvas fabricator and then a smaller one.

The opportunity for us to go into business a year ago, was to bring all his experience to the business, adding his marine trimming qualification and training to Bay Canvas.

Shaun loves spending time with his partner, his 4 children and the rest of the family and friends.

When not working or spending time with his family, Shaun enjoys surfing, snowboarding, exploring the Bays, its surrounds and chilling.

Shaun has a great sense of humour, is calm, methodical, organised, professional, and always willing to go the extra mile for our customers, which are all great attributes for a business.

Caroline

Director and Operations Manager

Caroline brings a wealth of experience in many different fields from community development, banking, business owner, interior designer, office management, tutoring, directing an educational program, volunteering with the Red Cross settling refugees into Aotearoa, being a Mum of 3 adult sons – one of the sons is Shaun, a grandmother of 8 and a wife of 41 years.

Caroline loves learning, travel, reading, movies, eating out, spending time with family and friends, and all things community.

Caroline is friendly, creative, super organized, very much a systems, policies, procedures person, all of which help in the smooth running of the business.

Caroline is on the Sustainability committee of OFPANZ

Merv Garrett

Original owner, Fabricator

Merv has a wealth of experience and training having done his training with the Air Force.  He owned the business from 1997 before selling it to the McCurdies in May 2019.

Merv is a perfectionist and has won many awards over the years with OFPANZ.  He was one of the 2020 Judges for the OFPANZ

He is highly respected and known for his caravan awnings and overroofs.

Merv decided more of a life balance was important for him and his wife Roslyn, so works 30 hours a week, enjoying a long weekend either cycling, motorbiking or caravanning.  Merv is also a keep fit and healthy gym man.

Andrew

Director, Finance Manager

Andrew is a Qualified CA and has worked in many sized businesses within South Africa, Botswana, Cook Islands and Aotearoa.  He also wrote computer software, lectured, managed and directed various size teams and organisations. His more recent position was that of Chief Financial Officer with a District Health Board.

Andrew was a marathon runner and hopes to get back into running when he retires from his busy day job, doing our accounts, learning how to quote and assist with installations, spending time with his wife, sons and 8 grandchildren. Besides all things financial, he brings his many years of experience, analytical mind, sense of humour and strong work ethics to the business.

Amy Davison

Trainee canvas fabricator / machinist

Our latest team member, Amy, enjoyed learning to sew at school and gained skills in dress making, pattern making and doing repairs. She has worked as a security guard, Barista, as an au pair and a retail assistant. She is a senior first aider too. She is friendly, bubbly, keen, with a great sense of humour. Amy looks forward to taking her home based sewing skills to another level, by joining us.
